Business Compliance and Taxation Guide
A free, text-based technical reference guide on Belize business rules, tax calculations, and payroll calculations. Provided by the Harbor Digital Solutions compliance team.
1. Belize General Sales Tax (GST) Calculations
Belize imposes a standard 12.5% General Sales Tax (GST) on the supply of most goods and services. Under local regulations, taxable businesses must charge and collect GST on sales, while tracking GST paid on purchases (input tax) to claim credits.
For compliant receipts, point-of-sale systems must print a detailed tax line breakdown showing taxable values, exempt sales, zero-rated products, and the total GST amount. Monthly returns must be submitted to the Belize Tax Services portal.
2. Social Security Board (SSB) Deduction Brackets
Payroll calculations must deduct employee contributions and calculate employer shares according to official weekly wage brackets.
Under the weekly schedules, contributions are determined by matching employees' weekly gross wages against the legislated wage brackets. Monthly payroll records must export correct contribution totals in CSV format matching the SSB employer portal template.
3. Labour Act Termination and Severance Regulations
Calculating severance pay on dismissal requires tracking exact lengths of employment and applying formulas legislated by the Belize Labour Act.
Calculations must account for accrued annual leave, sick leave eligibility, maternity leave deductions, and notice period payouts. Final pay sheets must generate clear receipts outlining each calculation line item to prevent labor disputes.
